Prairie Lakes Conference

Editor's note: The Iowa Environmental Council is proud to sponsor the Prairie Lakes Conference.

A vibrant example of that connectivity is where prairie and lakes meet. A mutual admiration society, these two ecosystems affect each other and depend on each other in the Iowa Great Lakes area.

That is why conservation professionals from throughout the region have banded together to create the Prairie Lakes Conference Thursday-Friday, Aug. 11-12, at the Arrowwood Resort & Conference Center in Okoboji.

Professionals, students and interested members of the public are invited to attend to learn about soil health, water quality and the connections between the two. Join us as we work to educate people on the way to protect our most valuable resources in a world that often doesn’t seem to care.

In addition to the conference, Clean Water Week will feature a variety of other environmental events. Check out the agricultural field day Wednesday, Aug. 10, the We Pedal Clean Water conservation bike ride and the Clean Water Concert Saturday, Aug. 13.

General and concurrent sessions will address a variety of prairie lakes issues, from large to small. Minnesota Department of Natural Resources wetland ecologist Mark Hanson will discuss natural lake ecology; Sean McMahon, executive director of the Iowa Agriculture Water Alliance, will present on Iowa’s Nutrient Reduction Strategy; Doug Peterson with the U.S. Department of Agriculture will address soil health issues; and Nicole Hansel-Welsh, shallow lakes program supervisor with the MN-DNR, will present on lake programs to our north.

A full schedule of speakers will be available at www.plciowa.com as they are confirmed.
