On Thursday, June 1, 2017, the Iowa Environmental Council will hold our fourth annual Pro H2O: Thirsty for Change event to celebrate and support a shared vision for clean water, healthy land and energetic advocacy for Iowa’s environment. Each year we honor those who have been instrumental in the fight for Iowa conservation and water quality. We are excited to announce that one of this year’s honorees is 2017 Pulitzer Prize winner, Art Cullen.
Cullen received the Pulitzer Prize for a series of ten editorials focused on the trail of money funding the legal defense of Sac, Buena Vista and Calhoun counties in the Des Moines Water Works lawsuit. The names of donors to this defense fund were being kept secret, and The Storm Lake Times worked persistently with the Iowa Freedom of Information Council to reveal the funding sources (Farm Bureau with other ag groups.) “We shut down a dark money account is what happened…” Cullen said to The Des Moines Register. “I felt that the public deserved to know where the money is coming from. When you know where the money is coming from, you know who is pulling the strings.”
Join us at Pro H2O and join the Council in honoring Art and hear him speak about his work. The event will be held at the Science Center of Iowa at 6:30pm on Thursday, June 1, 2017. Hors d'oeuvres and drinks will be served, and live music will be provided by Shawn Munday.
Look out for upcoming blog posts featuring our other honorees, Franklin Codel on behalf of the Wells Fargo Green Team, Liz Garst and RDG Planning and Design.
